Filling a Gap

Round 4 2006-2007
Project Reference No: ESF /0607/597
Project Dossier Number:NW220

Project Description

We will provide the opportunity across Lancashire for individuals (365) with qualifications no longer current or irrelevant in their current employment to update their qualifications so that they are appropriate to the sector in which they are currently employed. We will focus particularly on those areas of Construction, Care and IT and through the Centres of Vocational excellence link with the relevant Sector Skills Councils.

We will deliver this project in partnership with local organisations and with local companies to achieve our aim and objectives, we will;

  • Use Business facing staff in Colleges to engage with local employers in the occupational and skill areas that we will target. The purpose of this engagement is twofold – firstly to raise awareness of the project and secondly to gather specific information around needs which we will then use to ensure that curriculum and offering is fit for purpose
  • Engage with the CoVEs and through them with the sector skills councils again to raise awareness and to use the CoVEs ability to identify future trends within sectors to, if not future proof the provision, at least ensure that the advice and guidance we offer encompasses future trends.
  • Through companies, unions, existing beneficiaries, brokerage agencies and conventional advertising we will publicise the provision to potential beneficiaries.
  • College staff, working with learning reps (where appropriate) will organise 1 to 1 information/guidance provision and organise action planning. This will include identifying any basic skills or ESOL needs, preferred learning modes and learning opportunities.
  • We will then deliver a training programme in the workplace (with supplementary learning centre based provision if required) making use of ICT packages to support flexibility and customisation, providing the opportunity to gain a Level 2 award. This will be a flexible programme, over an average of 34 weeks.

Co-ordination of learning programmes will normally be carried out by the local college, working with other partners, however, where specialist NVQ provision is needed and could best be provided by a College with particular expertise the LCC will arrange this.
